Local tenpin bowler John Matley has returned from the Gold Coast with another collection of bronze, silver and gold medals won at the Pan Pacific Masters Games.It’s become a common practice for the 77-year-old, who has been competing in the Masters Games since joining the circuit in 2003.Competing in the Over 75 Tenpin bowling competition John won a gold medal in the Men’s Triples with mates John Crosset and Bill Williams.He also picked up a silver medal in the Men’s Doubles teaming with John Crosset, a bronze medal in the same competition with Bill Williams, a bronze in the Mixed Doubles with Leo Chia and a bronze in the Men’s Singles.Bowling was originally a recreational sport for John – one he picked up after retiring from tennis. But now every year he bowls at the Masters Games and inevitably returns home with a collection of medals.He is supported by his partner Gay Gibbons who travels down with him to compete. So far the couple have amassed 165 medals between them over 15 Masters Games.
This year 18,000 athletes from 40 different countries competed in the Games in a total of 67 sports.Mr Matley said he enjoys the banter of bowling with good friends at the Masters Games.“We all have a crack at each other, it’s serious but it’s fun,” he said.“The camaraderie between us is great.John said there were a lot of people who would class tenpin bowling as a social sport, but it was represented at key events like the Masters Games.He still regularly bowls at Bowland Whyalla on Monday nights.
