On June 6, 2018 the two rescued a two-year-old child who had wandered away from his home, becoming lost in the woods west of Silver Creek. As temperatures began to dip into the lower 40s that evening, concerns became grave as the child was only clothed in a diaper and tee shirt.As search and rescue teams continued on, Braidich, who was traveling a quite stretch of trails on his ATV heard a child’s voice coming from the woods near a set of CSX tracks. Turning towards the sound he eventually ran into Tytka. Together, following the direction of the child’s voice, they came upon a steep hillside with a 30-foot drop.While scanning the far ravine side, the men noticed a fallen tree about half-way up the slope. Standing behind it, frightened and alone, was the toddler.

“Teddy and Jim, through their spontaneous and heroic actions, demonstrated character and compassion for the welfare of others and the life of the child was saved, due to the virtue of their behavior,” Sen. Young said.

Established in 2014, the New York State Liberty Medal became the highest honor a senator can bestow upon a constituent. It is awarded to individuals who merit special recognition for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts.“Teddy and Jim are an example to us all. Recognizing exceptional action that protects and benefits others is why the Liberty Medal was created,” Sen. Young stated. “I was honored to be able to present them with these medals.”
