Hartford Community Competition from Community Medal Day at school
On Thursday, November 2, over 1,800 students attended the HMF FitKids at School Medal Day, which is home to 39 schools in Connecticut. The culmination of weeks of training supported by the Hartford Marathon Foundation. From Annie Fisher STEM Magnet, Batchelder School, Betances STEM, Breakthrough II North, Breakthrough Magnetic South, Burr Community School, Env. Martin Hook College, Martin Luther King School, Fox Primary School, Lenzion College, School of Sports and Medical Sciences and Western District School of Science scientists attended the event.
Now this year is the 10th year. This event has served more than 15,000 students, offering free classes for students in Years 4-8, and they encourage a healthy and positive lifestyle through running. Students attend a five-week training program throughout the fall and then run the last mile on Thursday at Rentschler Field celebrations. They won medals in honor of their hard work for weeks.
This exciting and energetic event includes music, announcers and spectators cheering for children while running. After the competition, students participated in the World Exposition, which includes interactive fitness stations such as Obstacle Course, Hula Hoop, Yoga and HIIT.
School sponsors include the Aetna Foundation, the Union Bank of Connecticut Foundation, Newman's Own Foundation and the Mountain Dairy, as well as individual donations to run the community and free transportation, snacks and hats to participating schools.
