KINTNERSVILLE — The start of his senior season will be delayed, but the finish will be more important.Returning PIAA Class 2A state champion Nate Haubert of Palisades will likely be sidelined until sometime next month because of an LCL tear in his left knee, but when he returns, look out.“I got hurt in practice last week, and I knew something was wrong right away, but I didn’t need surgery and pretty soon I’m going to start upper body (conditioning),” said Haubert, who won his state title at 145 pounds last March.“I’ll be out of the brace in about two weeks and really start getting ready to go.”
Haubert, after placing fourth in Hershey as sophomore, got going right away last season as he compiled a 31-3 record on the way to becoming the second state champ in school history (Andy Povenski was the first in 1997). No Palisades wrestler has ever won two state championships.
In the state final, Haubert dominated Kollin Myers of Boiling Springs (District Three) 9-3 to reach the top step of the podium.“My goal is to win another state title,” said Haubert, also a standout football player for the Pirates. “Nobody at the school has ever done that and I’d love to be the first, but I know it’s not going to be easy. I don’t feel any pressure to do it, I’m just anxious to get going.”The last Intelligencer-area wrestler to win two straight state titles was North Penn’s Zac Fryling in 2002 and 2003.“It would be a great feeling,” Haubert said. “Winning a state title last season was unbelievable and working to get another one is what I’ll do.”And when he’s done wrestling for the Pirates he’ll continue the sport close to home as he’s already committed to Lehigh University.
