acton box borough runnel ars medat coaches meet
On Sunday Nov. 4, the Acton-Boxborough cross-country teams competed against teams from across Massachusetts in the MSTCA Coaches’ Invitational at the Wrentham Development Center.
In this race, runners compete by grade on the 5-kilometer and the freshman 3-kilometer courses over grassy fields and rolling hills.
Highlighting the event for A-B was sophomore Grace Maffei who won the sophomore girls race of 132 runners with a time of 20 minutes, 30 seconds. Close behind her was Ameria Bohling, who placed fourth at 20:37.
A-B coach Lisa Owen said, “Grace ran a great race as she paced herself and then made her move at the right time to be the top sophomore. Amelia, a freshman, moved up to the sophomore race to place fourth and to run very strongly in a tough field.”
With the top 50 in each race receiving medals, the A-B girls had medal winners in each race: Maffei and Bohling in the sophomore race; Findley Anderson (14th at 21:46) in the junior race; Kirsten Forrester (11th at 21:39), Emily Kao (30th at 22:15), and Ivana Barnes (38th at 22:25) in the senior race; and Maggie McInerney (seventh at 12:23) and Aparna Kamath (44th at 13:35) in the freshman 3-kilometer race.
The A-B freshman boys placed first as a team in their 3-kilometer race, with four top-50 medal-winners: Caleb Straayer (fifth at 10:22), Drew Richardson (13th at 10:43), Jeffrey Li (22nd at 10:54), and Andrew Martineau (43rd at 11:11). Aditya Nambiar (64th at 11:26) also contributed to the first-place freshman team finish. The senior race saw medal-winners Hugo Garro (32nd at 17:52), Shaunak Sinha (36th at 17:57), and Oskar O’Hara (39th at 18:01).
The Coaches Invitational marks the end of regular-season competition. Next Saturday the A-B teams will place their best seven runners on the line at the Eastern Mass Division 1 Championship races in Wrentham.
