Molly DeMarzo wasn’t sure exactly where she wound up among them, but she knew she ran fast enough.
The Crestwood freshman stayed inside the pack that ultimately rounded out the top 25 for Class 2A’s girls at the PIAA Cross Country Championships. DeMarzo’s memorable debut season officially ended in 19th place in 20 minutes, 25 seconds — and on the state medal stand Saturday at Hershey.
It was crazy. At the same time, you’re so tired. There’s a lot of emotions going through your head,” DeMarzo said. “I just stayed with the pack and just tried my best, and I think that turned out pretty good.”
The top 25 individuals in all six races received state medals. DeMarzo was running comfortably ahead of that cut-off line, even inside the top-15 through roughly two miles.
In Class 3A girls, Hazleton Area senior Sarah Myers and junior Katie Balay finished together in 22:29 for 191st and 192nd and exited the finishers’ area hand-in-hand.
“To finish with Katie meant the world,” Myers said. “For the first quarter-mile, I lost her and I felt lost without her. We’ve been running together since my eighth-grade year. We pushed each other, for sure.”
It was both of their second time at states. Myers ran with the Cougars’ team as a freshman and made it back for one final race with Balay, who’s built a nice support system with Myers since junior high.
Myers said they always call out rough patches on a course or encourage each other through races. So, a simultaneous finish was a fitting end to Myers’ Cougars career.
“It was my favorite year. The team was really close. Everybody got along and worked really hard,” she said. “I hope that everybody makes it next year.”
