FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) - A special Memorial Day run was held in Florence on Saturday in honor of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom.
St. Anthony Church and School hosted the Run for the Heroes Run Saturday morning. Participants had the option of running or walking in the 5K and 10K race. Hundreds of people turned out to show their support for local veterans. Vietnam veteran Will Horton said he was pleased with the turnout and the success of the event.
“I’m a veteran so I feel good about looking at my people that fought for our country and such and I felt very happy to with be this and they did a great job. I’m very happy with the team," said Horton.
After the race, participants were treated to breakfast in the cafeteria. They enjoyed pancakes, fruit, and bacon. They also got the chance to mingle with fellow runners. St. Anthony students who participated in the run said were just glad to show their support for veterans and to be apart of the race.
"It felt good helping," said Kaitlyn O'Donnell. Her friend, Rita Elya, said "it feels like we’re apart of something bigger than just our little lives. So it felt good.”
All proceeds will go toward St. Anthony school and the American Red Cross.
